In an effort to accurately descibe Taronga Zoo, I did a little online research and discovered that "Taronga" is an aboriginal word meaning "beautiful view." How true. This zoo is amazing and the view from it is absolutely stunning, as it sits on a high ridge on the opposite side of Sydney Harbour overlooking the Opera House and Sydney city skyline. The Taronga Zoo is also rated the #2 most fascinating attraction in Sydney.
For Ron and I, the zoo was probably our favorite attraction in Sydney thus far. We began our day with another LONG walk down to Sydney Harbour where we took a ferry across the harbour to Taronga Zoo. Once we got off the ferry, we took a sky cable car up the hill and over the zoo to the entrance. As we rode up the cable car, it looked as though we were riding over a rainforest with all varieties of exotic animals below. It is by far the best zoo I've ever been to with beautiful brick walkways through bushland and rainforest. I also fell in love with the incredible variety of native animals, such as koalas, wallabies, kangaroos, giant salt water crocodiles as well as all of the beautiful birds native to Australia. There was also an incredible variety of animals from Southeast Asia from elephants to the beautiful red panda (that I didn't even know existed), gorillas and so on. I could go on and on. From the marine life to reptiles, this zoo really does cover an incredible variety species.
We have so many more pictures that we couldn't possibly post them all, but I hope you enjoy the ones we've included as much as we enjoyed our day at the zoo!
